Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has taken oath as Vietnam’s new president after a secret vote by the parliament.

Trong becomes the first person after Ho Chi Minh to simultaneously(1) head the Party and executive branches of governance in Vietnam.
Ông trở thành người đầu tiên sau chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh đồng thời đứng đầu Đảng và bộ máy hành pháp tại Việt Nam.
Earlier this month, he was unanimously nominated for the position by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Đầu tháng này, ông đã được Trung ương Đảng Cộng sản Việt Nam đề cử cho vị trí này.
His name was the only one that the parliamentary standing committee recommended for the position.
Ủy ban thường vụ quốc hội cũng đề cử duy nhất tên của ông cho chức vụ này.
“I swear to be loyal to my country, my people and the Vietnamese Constitution. I swear to fulfill my duty by the Party, the government and the people,” said Trong, taking the oath during the swearing-in ceremony that was broadcast live on national radio and television Tuesday afternoon.
“Tuyệt đối trung thành với tổ quốc, với nhân dân, với Hiến pháp nước Cộng hoà Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam. Nỗ lực rèn luyện phấn đấu hoàn thành nhiệm vụ mà Đảng, Nhà nước, nhân dân giao phó,” ông nói, tuyên thệ trong buổi lễ đã được phát sóng trực tiếp trên đài phát thanh và truyền hình quốc gia vào chiều thứ Ba.
“People may ask what I’m feeling right now, and I would say that I’m both happy and worried at the same time. Happy because the Party and the people have entrusted(2) me with this mission. Worried because now I have to live up to my position and do my best for my country,” the new president said in a speech following the swearing-in ceremony.
“Chắc có đại biểu muốn biết, tâm trạng của tôi lúc này thế nào. Tôi xin thưa thật rằng, tôi vừa mừng, vừa lo. Mừng là vì được Quốc hội, được nhân dân tin cậy, yêu mến giao nhiệm vụ. Lo là làm thế nào để hoàn thành được thật tốt trách nhiệm của mình, ”vị Chủ tịch nước nói trong một bài phát biểu sau lễ tuyên thệ.
