Nghĩa: Như vậy, vì vậy

Therefore đứng giữa câu
Khi đứng giữa câu, trước Therefore thường là từ And hoặc dấu phẩy, sau therefore có thể lược bỏ đi chủ ngữ.
We were unable to get funding and therefore had to abandon the project.
=> Chúng tôi không kêu gọi được vốn và vì vậy phải bỏ dở dự án.
We were unable to get funding and therefore had to abandon the project.
We are a moral, ethical people and therefore we do not approve of their activities.
=> Chúng tôi là những người có đạo đức và vì vậy chúng tôi không chấp nhận được những hành động của họ.

Sau Therefore chúng ta sử dụng dấu phẩy:
He is very mischievous. Therefore, he was punished.
=> Anh ta rất tinh nghịch. Vì vậy anh ta bị phạt.
So
Từ So trong tiếng Anh có rất nhiều nghĩa và cách dùng khác nhau. Trong bài viết này mình sẽ đề cập tới hai cách dùng thông dụng chúng ta thường gặp là:

=> Ngôi nhà rất đẹp.
Don’t be so stupid!
=> Đừng quá ngu ngốc như vậy.

So (liên từ): như vậy, vì vậy
Trong trường hợp này So bằng nghĩa với Therefore, dùng để nối hai mệnh đề nguyên nhân và kết quả.
My knee started hurting so I stopped running.
=> Đầu gối tôi bắt đầu đau nhức, vì vậy tôi không chạy nữa.
I was lost so I bought a street map.
=> Tôi bị lạc, vì vậy tôi mua một tấm bản đồ đường phố.

Giống:
Như vậy So và therefore có cách dùng giống nhau chỉ trong trường hợp So là liên từ và chúng đều có nghĩa là: Bởi vậy, vì vậy
My knee started hurting, so I stopped running.
= My knee started hurting, therefore I stopped running.
Khác:
So và therefore khác nhau ở một số điểm sau:
- So = “as a result”
She is wise. So she is liked by others.
=> She is wise and as a result she is liked by others
- Therefore = “ that is why”
He is very mischievous. Therefore he was punished.
=> He is very mischievous and that is why he was punished
- Ngoài là liên từ, So được sử dụng với rất nhiều nghĩa khác nữa.
- So dùng thông dụng trong văn nói, therefore trang trọng hơn, thường dùng trong văn viết.
